A man has been arrested for slamming his wife’s head into a wall and killing her days after she gave birth to their child.
The incident took place in the Colonel İbrahim Karaoglan neighbourhood in the city of Kilis, in the province of the same name in south-central Turkey, near the border with Syria on 13 October but the information has only been made public now.
Husband Muhammet Mahmut Ozyer, 29, reportedly had an argument with his wife Fatime Gul Ozyer, 27, which allegedly resulted in him slamming her head into a wall, according to Turkish media outlet Milliyet.
The new mum had given birth to their baby girl 20 days ago but she died in hospital after fighting for her life for a week, the media outlet reports.
The couple had reportedly been married 15 months, with the husband allegedly kicking and slapping his wife before hitting her head against a wall during the argument.
She suffered a broken nose and bruises to her body, as well as a brain haemorrhage.
Neighbours called the police after hearing the noise and the authorities detained the husband upon arriving at the scene. The woman, who was reportedly lying motionless on the floor, was taken to Kilis State Hospital.
She was then transferred to a private hospital in Gaziantep where she later died.
Ahmet Cetin, the woman’s father, is quoted in Milliyet as saying that his daughter’s husband had been violent since the day they got married.
He said: “My daughter had a brain hemorrhage, cardiac arrest, her nose was broken, her body was bruised all over, she died. Her husband, who made my daughter this way, was arrested and put in prison on the same day.
“At first, it was believed to have been the case of assault and injury. After the doctors’ report, it was understood that this was not a beating and that she was left to die after being fatally beaten, and the person was arrested.
“All I ask is that such savage people do not go unpunished. As a father, my heart is breaking. May God never let anyone experience this pain.”
