This is the bizarre moment a humanoid robot serves customers their drinks on a terrace in Spain to help enforce social distancing as the country opens up again.
The robot called Alexia is serving the tables on the terrace of Bar Baviera in the Plaza del Castillo square in the city of Pamplona in the province of Navarre in northern Spain.
The footage shows the 1.60-metre (5-foot) tall robot moving around the terrace tables while it carries a tray with drinks.
A customer is then seen picking up the glasses of wine and pressing a button on the robot so the machine can go back to work, seemingly following a trail set out on the ground for its rounds.
Reports say company Cocuus, which specialises in technology solutions for catering companies, has taken advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to help the bar reduce social contact by introducing the robot which uses Artificial Intelligence.
The Founder of Cocuus, Pachi Larumbe, told Newsflash: “We are developing the android and improving some features. We offer solutions to catering companies and the android was initially thought of to serve canapes at parties and make a show.
“The bar belongs to a friend and we lent it to him. It can help waiters and it can also interact with customers as they can ask it questions that it can answer by surfing on the internet.”
The robot reportedly has a market price of between 4,000 EUR (3,587 GBP) and 8,000 EUR (7,173 GBP) although Cocuus offers it to rent for 250 EUR (224 GBP) a month.
Larumbe told Newsflash: “It (the robot) has been very well received by customers. Kids love it and people have shown a lot of enthusiasm with it this weekend, taking pictures and interacting with it.”
