This huge whale’s swollen corpse has been found on the Chilean coast after becoming washed ashore.
The huge whale was found dead in the area known as Costa Laguna, in the northern Chilean region of Antofagasta.
Locals shared photos of the whale, whose body was partially swollen as is seen here in the pictures and video.
According to local media, the neighbours called the Army to inform them about the presence of the dead whale.
The dead animal will be removed by the Chilean authorities, according to local media.
Port boss Julian Aguirre told local media it was difficult to reach the animal because it was stranded in a hard-to-reach place and so members of SERNAPESCA (Servicio Nacional de Pesca y Acuicultura-National Service of Fish and Aquaculture) were now working to remove the tragic creature.
He also added that the Army is guarding the area in order to avoid accidents between the whale and boats.
Carlos Guerrero, an expert from the Antofagasta University, told local media that during this time of the year there are a lot of anchovies so a lot of birds and mammals gather in the bay.
He also said that this is a 15-metre (50-foot) fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) and added that “probably it died around a week ago and as its body is swollen the sea pushed it back to the seashore”.
