This is the shocking moment an explosion at an oil refinery leaves a group of workers engulfed in a huge fireball.

The incident was filmed by a CCTV camera at the Grushovaya Oil Plant in the city of Novorossiysk in the south-western Russian region of Krasnodar Krai.

In the footage, three men appear to be working on a pipe in front of a large tank as a group of colleagues stand further away.

Everything appears normal for a few seconds before a huge fireball suddenly engulfs the men and quickly spreads on both sides.

Workers are seen ablaze as they scatter in all directions.

According to reports, the local authorities have explained that the oil refinery employees were working on an out-of-use tank when the incident occurred. The explosion is believed to have been sparked by the remnants of leftover fuel.

The emergency services arrived on the scene and firefighters reportedly needed around half an hour to extinguish the blaze as the injured were cared for by paramedics.

At least five workers were injured by the fireball and are currently being treated in hospital, according to local media.

A special commission has reportedly been put together to investigate the incident.
