This is the shocking moment hailstones the size of golf balls bombard a Chinese city killing one farmer’s 4,400 ducks and shattering motorists’ windscreens.

The deadly storm hit Shangrao in the south-eastern Chinese province of Jiangxi and was accompanied by strong winds that sent the hailstones hurtling towards the small city and surrounding areas during a 20-minute downpour.

According to local media, farmer Mr Ding lost 4,400 ducks when the killer hailstones bombarded a field and wiped out the unsuspecting waterfowls.

In one photo, dozens of dead ducks are seen piled up in a pond on Mr Ding’s farm.

The distressed farmer told local media: “Only 200 ducks survived. This has cost me around 30,000 RMB (3,430 GBP) and I do not have insurance to cover it.

“I can only report it to the government and see if they will offer me compensation.”

Meanwhile, an elderly resident was struck on the head by one golf-ball-sized hailstone while out shopping.

In the photo, she is seen with a temporarily deformed forehead.

According to local media, other residents were affected by the 20-minute downpour and motorists reported smashed windscreens.

In video footage of the storm, large hailstones are seen battering public spaces and farmland, and the dead ducks piled up.
