Local media report Rohan Nayyar, 27, was locked in the back seat of the car at the time of the explosion which is believed to have been caused by the flames reaching a canister of liquid petroleum gas (LPG).

The authorities said that Nayyar had been studying for a degree in chartered accountancy. Reports state he was believed to have been depressed because of a skin problem which he was being treated for at a hospital.

The startling incident occurred near a school in the city of Chandigarh in the union territory of the same name.

Firefighters and police arrived on the scene but Nayyar was already dead by the time the flames were put out, according to reports.

Nayyar is believed to have taken his own life and had told his family he was transporting the LPG for a friend.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
