HIT-AND-RUN: Boy, 12, Charged With Murder After Crashing Into Texas Granny, 82, Killing Her

A 12-year-old boy has been charged with murder after a Texas granny aged 82 was killed in a hit-and-run.

The footage, captured by a CCTV camera on a nearby home, shows the scene where Florence Kelly was struck and killed while driving to get groceries in the city of Dallas, in the US state of Texas, on 7th November.

It has emerged that the boy, who has now reportedly been charged with murder after hitting Kelly with the grey 2005 Toyota Avalon, fled the scene on foot, as can be seen in the footage, along with two young female passengers, leaving a 13-year-old girl pinned inside the Avalon.

Witnesses reportedly ran after the trio but failed to stop them, according to local media.

The footage shows that the vehicles were just left in the road, with one of them gushing smoke after the crash, which took place just after 11am.

The Dallas Police had asked for the public’s help in identifying the suspect, saying on 8th November: “Dallas Police Detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect involved in a hit-and-run crash on November 7, 2022, on Royal Lane.”

Kelly was taken to hospital but she did not survive her injuries. The 13-year-old girl, who has not been named, was taken to hospital in a serious condition but survived.

Kelly’s daughter Rebekka told local media that no one in the fleeing group bothered to call 911.

She added: “I’ve never had a Thanksgiving, Christmas, a birthday, or a Mother’s Day without my mother.

“I will miss her every day of my life, and she was my best friend.”

She also said: “It was surreal and heartbreaking. It was something that we never imagined having to go through.”

The Dallas Police Department has now confirmed in a statement that the suspect has been identified and charged with murder, one month after the fatal crash.

Donovan Kelly, the dead old age pensioner’s grieving son, told local media: “He’s killed somebody.”

He added: “He’s taken an innocent life, and there are consequences for your actions. I don’t really care how old you are.

“He consciously decided to get behind the wheel of the car and drive it with no driver’s license, obviously no real driving experience, and basically hurtled into our mother’s car, killing her.

Donovan also said: “I just cannot fathom some of the things that we’ve heard, that we’ve learned about him. It’s just unbelievable.”

He also said of his late mother: “There was nothing that she would not give us, nothing that she would not do for us, and that’s gone. We have the memories and the example that she set that we certainly strive to follow. But to be able to see her and talk to her, we don’t have that anymore.”

Speaking about the defendant’s age, Rebekka said: “It’s a gut punch, I knew he was young, that’s horrifying. The whole thing is horrifying.”
