This newlywed couple have been killed in a horror car crash on the motorway when the man, who was a police highway patrol officer, and his new wife were returning from their honeymoon.
The incident took place on the BR-040 motorway in the municipality of Congonhas, in the south-eastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, on 13th November.
Photos show the extensive frontal damage to the silver Ford Ka in which the young couple were travelling after it collided with two lorries.
According to the Brazilian highway patrol, the vehicle collided with the first lorry, causing the car to spin in the road. It then ended up on the wrong side of the motorway, where it was hit by the second lorry.
Driver Victor Hugo Oliveira Soares, who was himself a highway patrol officer, was killed instantly. His wife, Maria Graca Marinho da Silva, was rescued by the emergency services, but she died en route to the hospital.
Soares and Silva had married on 4th November, just nine days before the accident, which happened on their return from their honeymoon in the south-east of the country to the city of Sinop, in the west-central state of Mato Grosso do Sul, where the couple lived.
The accident caused the motorway to be closed for around three hours. Both lorry drivers reportedly emerged unscathed.
The highway patrol is investigating the cause of the accident. A spokesperson has sent a message of condolences to the family and friends of its former employee and his newlywed.
Soares, who had worked for the patrol for 11 months, was buried in the Mato Grosso do Sul state capital of Campo Grande on 15th November.
Following the couple’s wedding, Silva had written a message to her new husband on social media that read: “I pray that our relationship is always light and balanced. I love you forever, my darling.”
