A hidden camera has snapped a fearsome wolf sinking its fangs into a deer’s neck on a German heath.

The camera was set up on a game trail on Luneburger Heath on the outskirts of the German town of Celle in Lower Saxony.

The photograph shows the wolf biting firmly into the deer’s neck, attempting to asphyxiate it and bring it down.

As the other images show, the wolf, and possibly other animals, then devoured the deer leaving the carcass behind to be discovered the next day.

Hidden cameras are set up in areas rich with wildlife and are triggered to take images day and night whenever they detect movement, including sometimes video. The pictures can then be sent directly to the owner’s phone.

The unnamed camera owner reported the incident to the wolf section of Lower Saxony’s Environmental Ministry where spokesman Stefan Niles said the best way to keep farm animals safe from wolves is to put up electric fences.

According to the German Hunting Association, the country has the highest concentration of wolves in the world in comparison to their population density.

Nevertheless, humans should not feel intimidated, since attacks occur very rarely.

The wolves’ increasing number is reportedly having a positive effect on controlling the wild boar population, which was growing significantly and damaging crops and property.
