This is the moment a “heroic” man climbs down a fence stretching across a canal to save a dog caught in the waters fighting not to drown.

The incident took place in a canal located in the area known as Monte Sinai, in the city of Guayaquil, in the western Ecuadorian province of Guayas.

In the video, the dog can be seen swimming in the canal when it is swept along by the fast-flowing water. The pooch then becomes caught on a fence stretching across the water in an area where the canal is separated from another canal.

A man identified as Raul Mina, who works for the public water company, can then be seen climbing down the fence and grabbing the dog by the scruff of its neck. He then lifts the pooch out of the water and he reportedly took it to safety.

He told reporters: “The pressure of water took the dog and dragged it to the fence, it got trapped there and it could have drowned and it was about to die because even a human cannot stand this pressure.”

Reports state the Mina, who has worked for the water company for 15 years, had to climb down the fence as the metal parts of the stairs at the side of the canal had been stolen.

The dog was reportedly taken back to its family after the incident.

The Mayor of Guayaquil, Cynthia Viteri, described Mina’s actions as heroic and said that he would be invited to the next session of the municipal council where he will receive a tribute.
