This is the moment a brave railway guard scales a girder bridge to release a stuck train after yobs had pulled on the emergency chain.

The incident took place in Chamarajanagar in the south-western Indian state of Karnataka and was filmed by a train passenger who posted it online.

In the footage, the heroic railway guard, identified as N. Vishnumoorthy, is seen scaling a high girder bridge without safety equipment to get to the stationary train.

He then releases the emergency brake that had become trapped on the outside of the train before going back the way he came along the metal girders located on a bridge high above the ground.

According to local media, several people were involved in pulling the emergency chain on the Chamarajanagar-Tirupati Express to stop the train as a prank.

Nimble-footed Vishnumoorthy then sprung into action to save the day, and also reportedly caught the culprits responsible for applying the emergency brake.

He handed them over to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and reportedly received an honorary certificate and a reward of 5,000 INR (57 GBP) for his efforts.
