This is the moment a hero cop battles with a torrential river after having rescued a trapped dog from its bank in a bid to reach colleagues on the other side.

The incident was filmed in the municipality of Santa Catarina in the north-eastern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon and was shared on Twitter by the local Civil Protection authority.

According to local media, the brave officer first saved the dog’s owner before returning to rescue the animal.

In the footage, the Civil Protection officer is seen cradling the dog as he lowers himself into the swollen river while attached to a safety rope.

After initially struggling to keep himself and the dog above the surface, the officer is pulled through the fast-moving water towards the bank by colleagues.

At the end of the clip, the unnamed officer is seen being helped onto the bank while still cradling the rescued pooch.

Reports said that tropical storm Fernand has battered the region in recent days and netizens praised the Civil Protection authority for their efforts during the troubled period.
