This is the moment a heartless pet owner apparently abandons ‘man’s best friend’ on the side of the road before driving off as the helpless pooch runs away them.

The clip which has made headlines in Taiwan was recorded in the city of Yilan, the seat of the island’s eastern Yilan County, on 7th July.

In the video, the SUV stops at a red light just before 8:30pm local time and a door suddenly opens on the left side of the car.

The pet mongrel jumps out of the vehicle onto the ground at the junction of Jiucheng South Road and Zhongshan Road, but the owner does not follow.

The car door shuts and the confused pooch is left circling around the vehicle before the lights turn green and the SUV drives off.

The poor dog is left chasing its owner’s car, which does not stop as the video ends.

The incident caused outrage online and members of the public have asked authorities to intervene. The car’s licence plate appears to be ANJ1163.

Liu Pi-yang, an official with the Yilan County Animal and Plant Disease Control Center, said they were looking for the driver.

“For breaching Article 29 of the Animal Protection Act, they will be fined between 30,000 and 150,000 TWD (770 and 3,845 GBP) for abandoning the pet, but also for endangering public safety by leaving the animal in the middle of the road.”

According to reports, the dog has yet to be tracked down.
