A couple’s 60-year-old romance and struggle against dementia has won hearts worldwide as a real-life version of ‘The Notebook’ movie.
Their heart-wrenching romance recently went viral on social media, capturing the tragedy of the woman losing her memory 15 years ago.
The couple’s love story captivated more than two million TikTok users after their granddaughter shared a video showing their 60-year romance.
An Argentinian user, named only as Catalina in local media, has shared the precious routine that her grandfather follows every day as he visits his wife, who is unable to remember anyone except him.
In the video, the 86-year-old husband can be seen brushing up his hair as he gets ready to visit his bedridden 82-year-old wife in hospital.
He apparently goes to visit her each morning at the care home she moved into after being struck down by Alzheimer’s disease 15 years ago.
As he stands by her bed, he bends down to kiss his wife tenderly on the cheek and then the couple embrace.
As they part, his wife can be seen smiling and looking up at her husband adoringly.
Catalina wrote in her video description: “My grandfather gets cute every morning to visit my grandmother in her room.”
The pair have been married for 59 years and are still going strong despite Catalina’s grandmother’s illness.
Many users apparently began believing in love once again after seeing how sweet and affectionate the old man is and asking his wife for permission to kiss her.
Catalina said in her video: “This is her routine every day, without fail. We are convinced that it is what keeps her here with us.”
She added: “If you ask me what love is, I would tell you to take a look at my grandparents.
“They have that look [in their eyes] that says everything, without having to say anything.”
In the movie ‘The Notebook’ an elderly husband reads to his dementia-stricken wife every day from an account of their romance she’d written before she lost her memory.
The film ends with the couple dying in their sleep after the wife has a brief flash of memory recalling who the man reading to her is.
