This is the hair-raising moment a thief reaches into a female motorist’s car while stuck in traffic and yanks her wig off her head before running off with it.

The incident took place on the M4 motorway in the city of Durban in the eastern South African province of KwaZulu-Natal and was filmed by a female motorist behind the wig-wearing woman’s car.

The camerawoman accompanied the footage with the message: “Please warn ladies not to drive with their windows open. I witnessed a third incident yesterday on the ramp to the M4. Too terrible!”

In the video, a young man is seen approaching a red Renault stuck in traffic.

He reaches through the open driver’s window, grabs the woman’s hair piece and yanks it from her head.

He then coolly jogs away, weaving through the queues of cars.

The victim, identified as Nombeko Madiba, was reportedly left shell-shocked by the bizarre theft and had to take time off work.

She said that the 50-centimetre-long wig was a gift from her sister who works as a hairdresser and costs 4,000 ZAR (219 GBP).

Madiba told local media: “I have been driving around for about two years now and this is the first time I was attacked like this. I am left with a bruise on my head and even now I am still shocked.”

Reports said that a policeman was in the traffic jam several cars behind Madiba’s vehicle and gave chase, but the wig thief managed to get away.

According to local media, it was the second wig-snatching incident this week after a woman was jumped in Cape Town by a man who escaped in a waiting getaway car.

Police spokesman Captain Nqobile Gwala called the cases “very rare”, but confirmed that they are being investigated.
