Police in Eskisehir, Turkey, arrested 21-year-old hairdresser Hasan Fakioglu after he blasted his partner in the head with a pistol during the row in his flat in Tepebasi.

Fakioglu claims he shot victim Aysenur Colakoglu, 21, after she admitted she had cheated on him.

However, her devastated father, Mesut Colakoglu, told local media they had split up four months ago and that Fakioglu had been pestering his daughter ever since.

Neighbours called emergency services on 18th December after hearing a gunshot and paramedics went straight to the scene.

After receiving first aid, Aysenur was taken to hospital by ambulance but died from her wounds.

Fakioglu and a friend identified only as M. F., who was present at the time of the shooting, were arrested.

The prime suspect admits he shot Aysenur but claims her death was an accident.

He told reporters while being transferred by police: “I thought she was cheating on me. She died by accident.”

Fakioglu is accused of murder and remains in custody as the investigation continues, while M. F. has been released under strict conditions.

Aysenur was also a hairdresser and had taken her final exam to get her certificate so she could open her own salon just hours before she was killed.

Femicide is a growing problem in Turkey, particularly after the country officially quit the Istanbul Convention in July last year.

According to the 2021 Annual Data Report announced by the ‘We Will Stop Femicide Platform’, 280 women were killed by men in 2021, while 217 women were found suspiciously dead.

According to data from the ‘Monument Counter’, which is “a digital memorial for women killed by violence” and is updated daily, 380 femicides have taken place in Turkey so far this year.
