This is the moment a Chinese grandfather has a narrow escape after he realises the ceiling is about to collapse – and he runs to rescue his grandchild to take shelter under a staircase.

The footage was filmed at the house in the city of Fuzhou in the Chinese province of Fujian, and was shared on the social network Douyin, which is what TikTok is called in China, recently.

In the video, the old man, who has not been named, can be seen sitting alone when he looks up and apparently notices the problem with the ceiling.

He stands up and as he goes into the other room, the ceiling suddenly collapses in the middle of the room with some parts of what appears to be cement falling to the place where he was sitting a moment ago.

The man meanwhile goes out of the room and then emerges back with a toddler in his arms, while looking at the ceiling and apparently trying to figure out what had happened.

Local media report that he is the grandfather of the child and praise his act of thinking about the child’s safety first rather than taking shelter first.

Nobody was hurt in the incident and the cause of the accident has not been reported.
