A 48-year-old grandmother has been arrested for killing her eight-year-old grandson and burning his remains in a field before pointing the finger at the victim’s dad.
The incident took place in the municipality of Mexicali in the north-western Mexican state of Baja California during a local event called ‘Fiestas del Sol’ (‘The Sun Festival’).
According to local media, the boy’s grandmother reported the disappearance of her grandson Miguel Angel Ayala Alonso and accused the child’s father, whose name has not been disclosed, of kidnapping him.
The 48-year-old woman, identified as Ana Luis, told the police the boy’s father took him during the ‘Fiestas del Sol’,
The eight-year-old boy’s burned body was found in the remains of a fire that had been lit in a field with wood gathered from the area, according to reports.
The Attorney General’s Office said that 90 percent of the victim’s body had been burned after being killed by two blows to his head.
The victim was identified after comparing DNA samples taken from the body with one of his siblings.
Reports said that the father denied abducting the child and when the police quizzed the grandmother she gave contradictory statements.
The grandmother then confessed that she had killed the boy and was arrested, according to local media.
The 48-year-old suspect is being held in custody as the investigation continues.
