This footage seen over 15 million times in less than 24 hours shows a pensioner perilously lowering her seven-year-old grandson down the side of a building with a rope to rescue her stranded pet cat.

The incredible incident happened in the county of Peng’an in China’s south-western province of Sichuan on 5th January when the OAP lowered the child from her fourth-floor balcony to rescue her cat trapped on a ledge below.

On China’s Twitter-like social media platform Weibo, it has since garnered more than 120 million impressions under the hashtag ‘pensioner dangles 7-year-old grandson with rope to save cat’.

According to reports citing local authorities, the schoolboy’s unnamed grandmother lives in a fourth-floor home inside the multi-storey residential block.

After she discovered that her pet cat had somehow stranded itself below on a third-floor ledge, the pensioner decided to send her young grandson to rescue it.

She reportedly strapped some rope around the boy’s body and began lowering him over the parapet, with footage taken by shocked neighbours showing two other unidentified individuals standing next to her on her balcony.

In the video, the boy manages to grab the animal and put it in a sack, before his grandmother slowly pulls him back onto her balcony.

Local residents who were left stunned by the woman’s stunt claimed they had attempted to dissuade her, but she would not listen.

Local official Wang Ying said they later tracked the woman down and gave her a warning for putting her grandson’s life in danger.

She said: “First of all, the child bears zero responsibility in this case.

“He’s 7 years old, attends first year at a local primary school, and his father works in Shenzhen.

“We gave his family member some educational criticism, and informed them that they could call the police or the fire service in similar circumstances in the future.”

The boy was not harmed during the rescue, reports said.
