Local media report voluntary firemen had to work to put out six fires from the area where the object is believed to have fallen to Earth.

The Director of the Chilean government agency the ‘Oficina Nacional de Emergencia del Ministerio del Interior’ (the National Office of Emergencies of the Interior Ministry, ONEMI), Alejandro Verges, said that the fires that occurred were “attributable to an object that, so far, has not been identified.”

He said that the voluntary firemen received reports and testimonies from local residents after they put out the flames.

Verges reportedly said the object was a “possible meteor” or “remains of space waste”.

The Mayor of Dalcahue, Juan Hijerra, said: “The firemen told me that, as they have a lot of experience, when they arrived what they could smell was not smoke from material, but from stone, like sulphur.” The smell apparently disappeared overnight.

He added: “I cannot confirm (that it is a meteorite), but it’s very strange. There cannot be six sources of fire in a radius of 200 metres and all of them isolated. It’s like if small balls of fire have fallen. Some burnt the roots and others burned a little more.”
