GO SNOW: Lack Of Snow Leaves Exposed Rocks Beside Piste That Kill Two Speeding German Teenagers

Two teenage skiers died when they sped off piste and crashed over rocks at a ski resort where the only snow was artificial, leaving the ground outside exposed.

With warm temperatures, many ski resorts have had to resort to snow cannons to generate enough of the white stuff for winter tourists.

But that means that often the areas outside the pasted runs do not have snow making it dangerous for anybody that crashes off the piste.

Reports indicate that the two 17-year-old German boys from the Berchtesgadener Land and the Upper Palatinate districts of Bavaria were travelling too fast when they headed down the road and lost control.

They crashed off the piste and flew more than 60 metres (200 feet) over the rocky ground suffering serious injuries, and died despite the efforts of people at the scene to try and resuscitate them.

Their families had reportedly known each other for a long time and often travelled together prior to the incident that occurred at around 11.05am on Wednesday, 28th December.

Police officials confirmed that the boys were reportedly skiing at high speed down an intermediate-difficulty red slope in the Steinplatte ski area in the district of Kitzbuehel, in Tyrol, Austria.

But they came off the edge of the run onto the steep, rocky slope that was described as a typical alpine and meadow terrain, with little snow, according to the police.

Tyrol Police said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: “Both suffered very serious injuries.

“Emergency responders immediately started the first aid measures and set the rescue chain in motion.

“The crew of two rescue helicopters then continued the resuscitation measures.”

But, both emergency and helicopter teams were unable to save the two boys who died at the scene.

A police spokesperson warned against the consequences of skiing too fast and added: “There’s just very little snow next to the slope.”
