This glamorous scam artist has been arrested in her luxury apartment after she allegedly defrauded several businessmen out of over a million pounds.
Otaciane Coelho allegedly posed as a millionaire heiress to scam two businessmen in the aviation sector out of BRL 1.6 million (GBP 221,215) before her arrest in the Brazilian city of Belem on Tuesday, 21st September.
According to the police, she is one of the biggest scam artists in the Brazilian state of Para (estimated population 8.8 million), and she is believed to have several other victims throughout the state.
She is believed to have defrauded her numerous victims out of an estimated BRL 10 million (GBP 1.4 million) in total.
According to the police, she has a very persuasive personality, which she uses to convince her victims to invest their money with her.
Police chief Neyvaldo Silva said: “She claimed to be a businesswoman, and several victims were harmed by her powers of persuasion, including very clever people.”
The police began investigating her after the two businessmen who paid her BRL 1.6 million filed a complaint after the aircraft they were promised failed to be delivered.
According to Elson Soares, the lawyer of one of the victims, the suspect had told her clients she owned land, a supermarket chain, a pharmacy group and real estate, and that she was due to receive an inheritance of BRL 38 million (GBP 5.3 million).
Police chief Silva believes there are others involved in the scams.
The suspect, who originally hails from the town of Porto de Moz, had been arrested earlier this year in the capital, Brasilia after she managed to convince a businessman to transfer a rural property to her name. However, she was subsequently released for reasons that are unclear.
The investigation into Coelho’s alleged crimes is ongoing.
