A little girl was left alone on the streets after her dad was run over and critically injured in a car crash.

The girl, aged eight, who was not named, was shopping with her father in the western German city of Cologne when the tragedy happened.

The youngster and her father, also not named, crossed over the road when he realised there was a cash machine behind them. He told her to wait where she was at Ebertplatz, and not wanting to leave her alone for too long, rushed over the street to get to the ATM.

But the 40-year-old man was hit by a motorbike, causing serious injuries that have left him hospitalised in critical condition and fighting for his life.

However the girl had not noticed that her father had been run over, and was scared by the crowds that suddenly gathered.

The worried youngster was rescued when she returned to the scene of the accident and spotted the police officers, and asked them to help them find her father.

They quickly realised that the man who had been hospitalised was her father, and they were then able to track down her mother and hand the child over.
