The baby girl, who was alive and moving but apparently too weak to cry, was wrapped in a thin blanket and left on top of a large pile of refuse including plastic bags and boxes.

Footage shows the child being cared for by passers-by, who try to feed her warm water using a spoon.

According to reports, the girl was handed over to local police who took her to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College.

She was diagnosed with conditions including pneumonia and was also found to have an imperforate anus.

The birth defect, due to which she was likely abandoned by her parents, means she has a blocked anus and cannot pass stool.

The newborn is undergoing treatment at the facility, which said it had scheduled surgery for her.

Local authorities are continuing the search for the girl’s parents, who are likely to face heavy punishment for abandoning the child.
