Girl, 5, Collects Bottles And Saves Pocket Money To Help Pay Med Bills For Brother Who Has Cancer

This young Chinese girl has been praised for saving her pocket money and also collecting bottles so she can raise cash to pay for her brother’s chemotherapy treatment.

The family lives in Tangshan which is a coastal, industrial prefecture-level city in the northeast Chinese province of Hebei.

The young girl, named Tong Tong, 5, who was filmed by local media collecting bottles, said she wanted to help her worried parents pay for her brother’s hospital bills.

Her teenage brother, named Yuan Yuan, was diagnosed with cancer after going to the doctor complaining about a toothache. When the medicine did not work and the inflammation did not go away, they conducted more tests and then came up with the shock diagnosis of leukaemia, which is an umbrella term for a number of cancers that develop in the bone marrow.

The family instantly went to a bigger hospital where the diagnosis was confirmed, causing his poor mother to collapse on the floor in shock.

He is currently undergoing chemotherapy for his acute myeloid leukaemia and although the boy’s mother was a suitable bone marrow donor the operation bills are still growing because he is undergoing anti-infection and anti-rejection therapy.

The family have already sold all of their chickens, as well as the van they used to deliver eggs and everything else that they can turn into money. Coupled with that, the boy’s father was also diagnosed with a tumour which was spotted when he was undergoing testing to see whether he was a bone marrow match.

With the costs spiralling for the treatment, and her worried parents unsure where to get the cash from, the five-year-old decided to give up on her pocket money and also insisted that she did not have any sweets or other treats so the cash could be spent on her brother’s treatment.

She has already given up on going to the nursery where she loved playing with her friends and instead accompanies her mother to hospital, with the pair reportedly living in a small room near the hospital to care for her big brother.
