Girl, 2, Abandoned In River By Adult Migrants Crossing From Mexico Into US

This two-year-old girl has been rescued from drowning in Rio Grande on the US-Mexico border after reportedly being abandoned by a group of adult migrants who used the opportunity to cross into America.

The shocking incident took place in an area known as ‘La Cortina’ (‘The Curtain’) located in the municipality of Acuna in the Mexican state of Coahuila, according to an official statement released yesterday, 31st January.

Agents from the National Institute of Immigration (INM) and the Ministry of National Defence (SEDENA) sprang into action after they were alerted by a group of adult immigrants that the toddler was drowning.

They indicated the girl’s location and the authorities managed to rescue her and place her in dry clothes.

The report said: “While the Mexican authorities rescued the minor, the adult immigrants took advantage to cross into American territory and abandon the girl.”

They found she had a plastic bag in her clothes which contained her birth certificate that was issued in Chile in October 2018.

They also found the tot was given a visiting card for humanitarian reasons which was still in effect when she was found as she was an applicant for refugee status.

The baby has been moved to a home and will remain in the care of the authorities who will provide her with the necessary protection and legal care.
