The 21-year-old self-employed man from the Windsor Mill neighbourhood, in Baltimore County, Maryland, USA, received a USD 5 (GBP 4.06) Holiday Cash instant ticket from his grandmother over the Christmas period.

But as he had reportedly never played the lottery before, he was shocked when he realised that it had netted him a USD 50,000 (GBP 40,595) prize.

The lucky winner told Maryland Lottery that he found it difficult to stay calm after the win, but he immediately called his grandmother after he came to his senses.

Overjoyed about her grandson’s luck, she then revealed that she had purchased the instant ticket at the Dorsey Shell gas station located at 1356 Dorsey Road in the community of Hanover.

The 21-yearold man arrived at Maryland Lottery’s headquarters in Baltimore to receive his prize on 23rd January 2023.

When asked about his future plans, he explained that he intends to use the money to take care of his family members.

Additionally, the Dorsey Shell gas station will receive a USD 500 (GBP 405) bonus from the lottery for selling the top-prize winning scratch-off.

Maryland Lottery said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: “The ticket went on sale in October 2022 with eight USD 50,000 [GBP 40,595] top prizes.

“There are still three big prizes remaining, along with five USD 5,000 [4,056] prizes and others ranging from USD 5 [4.06] to USD 1,000 [GBP 811.3].”
