Two German soldiers have been sentenced to three years in prison for raping a female colleague as she walked back to her barracks.

The sentence was passed at the Bad Kreuznach District Court on 24th February.

It came after two men aged 26 and 30, names not disclosed, were found guilty of raping the fellow soldier at the army barracks in the town of Baumholder in the district of Birkenfeld in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate in March 2018.

The victim, who is originally from the town of Zweibrucken, had been on mess duty that evening where she was responsible for serving food.

She walked back to her room at around midnight but was followed by the men who then forced her to have sex with them.

Both defendants were found guilty and sentenced to three years behind bars. The 26-year-old man was also charged for assault for reportedly biting the victim’s neck during the rape.

The victim reported the incident three months after it happened following a conversation with a friend who encouraged her to tell the local authorities about it.

Local media said the suspects gave contradictory statements initially, saying they did not have sex with the victim but later claiming they did but it was consensual.

It is unclear if the suspects plan to appeal the sentence.
