A German artist has arranged for a game of football between naked players to take place to complain about the increasing commercialisation of the sport.

The match in which the two teams were in the nude apart from their footwear was organised at the Stimberg Stadium in the town of Oer-Erkenschwick in North Rhine-Westphalia

The artist Gerrit Starczewski said: “I want to make a statement that I think the football system is sick, and that’s why we are all getting naked.

“Everybody’s looking to be genuine but the only way to be genuine is to have no extras, and that includes everything including the clothing covered in advertising.”

The players were allowed to put their numbers on their backs, and were differentiated by the different coloured socks.

He also said that the stunt was not just about commercialisation in terms of advertising on clothing, but also at the way footballers used social media to create a false idea of beauty.

He said: “On social media everything has to be perfect, and that is giving a false impression again as part of the growing commercialisation.”
