A German medic has died of COVID-19 on the Spanish island of Majorca two days after testing positive, making him the first registered doctor to die of the virus in the Balearic Islands.

After testing positive for COVID-19, Bernd Harald Kablitz, 59, had been isolating at home with telephone monitoring since Sunday 16th August.

Mr. Kablitz, a specialist in General Surgery and Digestive Disorders, had his own practice on the Spanish island of Majorca although he also consulted at various private clinics.

According to the Official College of Doctors of the Balearic Islands (Comib), the doctor began to experience mild symptoms of the virus last week and underwent a test.

Two days later, his condition suddenly deteriorated and he passed away at home of respiratory failure on 18th August.

According to Comib, the German doctor was a keen sportsman, a competitive swimmer and did not have any previous serious conditions.

The 59-year-old medic was married with two children.

The same day as the doctor’s death, new restrictive measures came into effect in the Balearic Islands to combat the spread of the virus.

New measures include a ban on boat parties and daytime festivals as well as a capacity reduction in cultural venues from 75 percent to 50 percent.

According to the latest figures from the John Hopkins University, Spain has registered 364,196 cases of COVID-19 and 28,670 related deaths.
