Fury At Cafe’s Baffling Toad Symbol For Men’s Loo

A cafe’s bizarre symbols for their loos showing a fat toad for men has baffled social media users in China.

By contrast the internet cafe in Guiyang, in Guizhou Province, uses an elegant swan image for women.

Phone footage captured by a curious customer showed how the symbols have taken over from the traditional figures showing men and women.

Some believe the switch is a comment on trans politics and the ever-growing call for gender-neutral loos.

Simply marked as ‘Swan Restroom’ versus the ‘Toad Restroom’, the only way to tell the two apart seems to be the tiny English words that let customers know where men and women should go.

The odd marking sparked heated debates among netizens after the clip surfaced on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok.

Many were seemingly displeased with the derogatory choice of symbol for men, apparently being referred to as ‘toads’.

Douyin user ‘laughing dimple’ said in a comment: “I’m a woman and I don’t think it’s fair.”

And ‘JH’ said: “This kind of discrimination against men should be severely punished.”

The chosen symbols were likened by many to the Chinese saying “a toad wishing to eat swan meat”.

It is often used to describe a person wanting someone or something out of their league.

Others also pointed out that many people do not know English so they could walk into either restroom, potentially leading to problematic misunderstandings.

Following the controversy, the cafe spoke out and claimed it was just their humorous take on gender roles.

The cafe added that the bathroom logos have since been replaced.
