A French tourist has died while trying to take a selfie at a Thai waterfall on an island popular with Brit tourists.

The incident took place at the same spot where a Spanish tourist also died in July, on the Thai island of Koh Samui, at the Na Muang 2 waterfall.

Thai police confirmed today (Friday) that the French man, 33 but unnamed in reports, died after falling from the waterfall while he was trying to take a selfie.

The incident took place on Thursday afternoon and the tourist died in the same spot as a Spanish tourist in July according to police lieutenant Phuvadol Viriyavarangkul.

The police officer also said that it was difficult to retrieve the body and that this took several hours because the waterfall is steep and slippery.

The officer said that the man’s friend said that the victim had been trying to take a picture of himself when he slipped and fell to his death.

In 2018, over 38 million tourists visited Thailand, according to the Thai government’s statistics, a 9-percent rise compared to 2017.

In 2018, a study showed that between 2011 and 2017 there were 259 selfie deaths in 137 incidents reported around the world.
