A French medical student who his family said had been in “perfect health” has died of thrombosis days after being administered the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

Anthony Rio, 24, developed thromboembolic complications which appeared after he received the vaccine in the Loire region in France.

Anthony, who was originally from the commune of La Turballe and who lived alone, was found dead on Thursday, 18th March in his apartment on the Vincent-Gache Boulevard in the city of Nantes, 10 days after being administered the vaccine.

A potential connection between the AstraZeneca vaccine and the thrombosis is under investigation by the public prosecutor’s office.

An autopsy of Anthony’s body will hopefully reveal if the “internal bleeding caused by thrombosis” mentioned in the death report is somehow connected to the vaccine shot he received.

His older brother, who had spoken to Anthony the day before, said: “He had a stomach ache but did not complain. He had nevertheless decided to go and visit his doctor on Thursday afternoon. He never managed to do it. They found him dead the night between Wednesday and Thursday.”

The family has since questioned the vaccine. They claim Anthony, who was in his sixth year of medical studies, was a healthy young man who took good care of himself and had no medical history.

His brother added: “He was in perfect health. So this vaccine is the only link to understand what happened.”

A spokesperson of the National Agency for Medicine Safety (ANSM) has said that “the case is under investigation.”

The spokesperson also said: “At this stage, there is no link between the cause of death and the vaccine. This death is the subject of an in-depth clinical investigation by the regional pharmacovigilance centres.”

France has changed its vaccination strategy and is now only vaccinating people over 55 years of age with AstraZeneca jabs.

Complications after AstraZeneca vaccinations continue to emerge on a global scale despite the European Medicines Agency (EMA) refuting any connection between cases of thrombosis and the vaccine.

On 17th March, Germany confirmed its ninth case in the city of Trier, where a 47-year-old woman was diagnosed with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) after receiving the vaccine.

Norway and Denmark have reported several deaths after AstraZeneca vaccinations within the past several days.

Eight incidents involving the same vaccine have been reported in Austria, which include complications such as CVST, pulmonary embolisms and strokes due to coagulation disorders.
