The Spanish government has confirmed they are investigating former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy after he was snapped allegedly breaking the country’s coronavirus lockdown.

Spain’s Interior Minister Fernando Grande Marlaska confirmed Rajoy is being investigated to determine if he broke the lockdown after TV channel La Sexta disclosed images of the former prime minister wearing sports clothes and seemingly going for a walk around his house.

According to La Sexta, Rajoy has allegedly broken the lockdown several times to do exercise outdoors.

The pictures show Rajoy walking in the street around his house in the Aravaca municipality in the Spanish capital of Madrid in black sports clothes with no shopping bags.

Marlaska said: “We are carrying out the necessary investigation to determine that (the lockdown break). The name does not determine a different application of the law.”

The Spanish government declared a state of emergency on 14th March restricting social movement only to the necessary activities including going to the supermarket or the doctor and commuting to work if the working activity is considered essential.

Breaking the lockdown can be punished with fines between 100 and 600 EUR (87 and 524 GBP).

According to the latest data from the Johns Hopkins University, there have been 174,069 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Spain, with 18,255 deaths.
