Former Middlesbrough FC forward Martin Braithwaite has been linked with a move to Barcelona with reports claiming he is “in the best position”.

Spanish newspaper ‘Mundo Deportivo’ said that current Leganes centre-forward Braithwaite, 28, is the strongest candidate to join Barcelona “on loan or transfer”.

Local media said that rumours surrounding the player’s move to the Spanish giants already existed as Braithwaite and Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong share the same agent which could speed up the process.

Another factor that makes the forward a favourite is his versatility as he can play as a centre forward or on the left wing which reportedly “complies” with club boss Quique Setien’s demands.

Other names rumoured to be linked to the move also include former Arsenal flop Lucas Perez, 31, and Getafe striker Angel Rodriguez, 32, however Mundo Deportivo claim Braithwaite “is in the best position”.

Braithwaite was sent to Leganes on a loan deal by Middlesbrough in January 2019 before he made the move permanent in July of the same year for a reported fee of 8.8 million GBP.

He has made 27 appearances for the club in the year so far, scoring 8 goals and making one assist. Leganes are currently fighting relegation as they are 19th in La Liga with 19 points.

They are set to play Celta Vigo on Saturday 22nd February.
