Former Boxing Champ Stabbed And Mugged During New Years

These images show the former World Boxing Organization super featherweight champion who was left in hospital after being stabbed with a butcher’s knife several times as he celebrated the new year with family.

The incident occurred in the city of Cordoba located in the central-Argentine province of Cordoba in the early hours of yesterday (Wednesday) while former WBO Super featherweight champion Jorge “La Hiena” Barrios, 43, celebrated New Year’s Eve with family.

Local media report Barrios did not suffer any serious injuries as most of the cuts were only superficial and he is expected to be released from Domingo Funes Hospital in Cordoba where he is currently being treated.

The boxer’s sister Edith Barrios spoke with local media and said: “He was with family enjoying karaoke. He was sitting when this guy hugged him. He thought it was friendly then he felt a strike.

“He stood up because he thought they were messing around. The family started yelling when he started to bleed and that is when he realised he had several cuts.

“The cuts were made by a butcher’s knife. He stole his wallet with all his money with more than 20,000 ARS (252 GBP) and all his documents.”

Local media report Barrios had his wallet and his mobile phone stolen during the incident.

The suspected assailant has been identified as Ramon Enrique Icardo. He has reportedly been detained by local police and is at the disposition of the prosecution. He is accused of armed robbery.

Barrios has a record of 53 wins, four losses and one draw. He was WBO super featherweight champion between 2005 and 2006.

He is currently still boxing however was out of the ring for some time after he hit a 20-year-old pregnant woman with his car who died from injuries sustained during the accident. He was found guilty of negligent homicide and served a three-and-a-half-year sentence starting in November 2014.
