A fanatical football fan who recently posted a message saying the only way he would ever miss a game was if he was dead has been crushed by a lift in a work accident.

Lift engineer Umutcan Turk, 24, had posted a picture at the ground of his team Besiktas together with the message: “The day I didn’t come to you is the day I died.”

A short while later, he was repairing a lift at a nine-storey hotel on Zubeyde Hanim Street in the district of Osmangazi in the Turkish city of Istanbul when the tragic accident happened at around 2pm yesterday (27th December).

He was working on the lift on the second floor when the cabin suddenly dropped and he lost his balance and ended up falling in the gap between the cabin and the wall and getting crushed.

Hotel staff quickly raised the alarm with the police and the fire brigade as well as medics, but they could only confirm the young man’s death.

His body was removed on the same day that his team was playing away in the city of Konya, where he was not there to see them lose one-nil.

Medics said that the injuries were such that he would have been killed instantly. His body was taken to the morgue of the Bursa Forensic Medicine Institute for an autopsy.

Besiktas football club is one of the ‘Big Three’ in Turkey and the photograph was taken at the Vodafone Park stadium on 20th December.

It is unclear if the police are carrying out an investigation into the incident.
