This is the moment a food delivery scooter rider cheats death after he is sent somersaulting through the air when an overtaking SUV drives into him head-on.

The startling incident occurred in Weidu District, Xuchang City, Henan Province when a food delivery rider was working on his electric scooter.

In the video, the electric scooter driver can be seen making his way down the motorway when a white SUV suddenly comes speeding towards him as the driver is overtaking other vehicles.

The SUV crashes into the scooter head-on and the rider is sent somersaulting through the air and over a lane divider before crashing onto the tarmac.

The scooter itself is dragged 60 metres (196 feet) down the road by the SUV and local media report the rider suffered a broken left leg and broken left arm in the incident.

He was taken to hospital and nurse told reporters he was conscious and had not suffered serious injuries to his head.

The SUV driver, who has not been named in reports, told traffic police: “I was overtaking from the left when I saw he is using his phone.” 

The driver pointed out to the police that the scooter rider should been in the designated lane for non-motorised vehicles and bicycles as traffic law in China prevents electric vehicles from using the main lanes.

A spokesperson for the traffic police told local media: “The SUV was going at a high speed, all the airbags were deployed in the crash. The driver was hit by the airbag. We still need further investigation to solve the question of who is responsible.”
