The incident happened in the cliffy area of Cala Vinyes, in the municipality of Calvia, in the eastern Spanish province of Majorca one of the Balearic Islands and the male friend, Adelardo Contador, 25, has now spoken about his ordeal.

He explained the incident, in which he and his friend Sandra Amoros, 24, were sitting on a right which gave way and crushed Sandra to death. The pair were both working as waiters in a bar in Palmanova and had gone for a walk to look at the moon and the night sky, walking down some steps to reach the rocks.

He said: “We sat down on the rock and before noticing, it had fallen over us. I had gone to my boss’ restaurant and waited for her to come out. She had told me she was showing me a very beautiful place”.

“She had been there last year. When we sat down on the rock, it counterbalanced. The rock we were sitting on fell onto us.”

The rock, reportedly weighing half a tonne, collapsed onto the pair and killed Sandra instantly while Adelardo had his legs trapped under it.

He said: “I started to call her, Sandra, Sandra, but she was not answering me. Thanks to my mobile phone, I could call the emergency services. I tried to calm down despite the pain.”

He used his touch to signal his position to the emergency services who managed to rescue him. He broke some vertebrae in the incident and he said: “That place should not be like that, open to the public, how is it possible that there are steps to get to the stones when some years ago a similar thing happened in Malgrats?”

David Contador, the victim’s brother, said that it took two hours for his brother to be rescued.

Speaking about his Sandra, Adelardo said: “We had known each other since last year. She was from Yecla, in the south-eastern Spanish region of Murcia, and I am from Barcarrota, in the western province of Badajoz. We laughed a lot.”

It is not unclear if the accident is being investigated by the authorities.
