The first case of a newborn baby being infected with COVID-19 in Russia has been recorded at a hospital in the capital Moscow.

The diagnosis was registered at the O.M. Filatov City Clinical Hospital No. 15 in the western Russian capital Moscow after the mother had previously tested positive for the deadly virus.

She gave birth to a baby girl by C-section and subsequent tests confirmed that the newborn had contracted COVID-19 as well, according to local media.

Doctors, who were aware that the mother had contracted the virus prior to going into labour, reportedly double-checked the COVID-19 test as children sometimes give false results.

The mother is being treated for the virus while her newborn has been isolated with doctors monitoring the poor tot.

Tatyana Golikova, 54, who has served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia for Social Policy, Labour, Health and Pension Provision since 2018, said there has been an increase in COVID-19 diagnoses in the country as testing has increased.

According to the official, the country is in the top three regarding the number of COVID-19 cases which has been estimated at over 460,000.

However, the Johns Hopkins University has registered 4,149 cases in Russia with 34 deaths and 281 recoveries.
