First Edition Incredible Hulk Comic Sells For GBP 360K

A rare pristine copy of the first edition of The Incredible Hulk has been sold at auction for over GBP 360,000.

The copy of The Incredible Hulk #1, published in 1962, features the Marvel character, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, with grey skin instead of his trademark green.

Marvel changed the Hulk’s colour for the second edition, as the grey came out unevenly on different pages due to the four-colour printing process of the time.

A 60-year-old comic book reveals the Hulk’s origin story when Dr Bruce Banner is first exposed to toxic gamma rays.

The pristine copy of The Incredible Hulk #1 was sold to an anonymous buyer for USD 490,000 (GBP 362,000).

The sale was handled by the online retailer ComicConnect.com where it ranked 9.0 for Very Fine/Near Mint quality grading.

ComicConnect.com spokesperson Vincent Zurzolo said: “Highly-graded copies of Hulk #1 are notoriously hard to find, due to the cheap paper used and the smudging of the gray color on the front cover.”

He added that there are seven known copies of the first edition with higher ratings, but it is extremely rare that one appears for sale.

Zurzolo said: “The new owner of this book now owns a special piece of American mythology that will continue to gain in value. It will be a cornerstone of his collectible investment portfolio. Hulk will only continue to get bigger with time, if you know what I mean.”

He said it was the highest price paid for the first edition of The Incredible Hulk, however it fell some distance short of the USD 3.25 million (GBP 2.40 million) paid for the first appearance of Superman in Action Comics #1 in April 2021.
