The startling scenes were recorded in the town of Almassora in the Valencian Community on the eastern coast of Spain after it was hit by a rainstorm.

In the footage, a fire engine can be seen reversing down the heavily flooded streets as firemen work to help people out of their homes.

The emergency workers are waist-high in water at some points as they carry elderly residents to safety.

The fire engine can be seen sending waves through the flooded streets and reports state firefighters had to use a boat to rescue some netizens, as can be seen in the images.

Local media report many elderly people had arrived in the town to spend the lockdown declared by the Spanish government on 14th March in their second homes.

Reports state that many of these are now being housed by relatives.

Firefighters are reportedly working to open channels to drain the floodwater into the sea.

Reports state local authorities are experiencing difficulties to drain the water from the private properties affected.

No injuries have been reported.
