This is the moment a painter’s van trundles down the motorway in flames and driverless after he got out just before the whole vehicle went up in smoke.

The incident took place in the Santo Domingo area of the city of Bilbao, in the northern Spanish region of Basque Country and was recorded by an onlooker.

In the video, a white van on fire can be seen making its way slowly down the outside lane of the motorway.

The van is emitting a plume of dark smoke before it comes to a halt in a grassy area by the side of the road.

Local media report the van belonged to a painter and was full of flammable materials.

The fire reportedly started with the driver behind the wheel due to a mechanical failure, and he then pulled over into the hard shoulder.

The driver then called the emergency services but just before they arrived the van started to move off for unknown reasons, travelling around 100 metres before coming to a halt.

The painter can be seen with his head in his hands at the start of the video.

The firefighters reportedly managed to put the fire out but the van was completely destroyed.
