A twisted thug who doused his ex-wife in a flammable liquid and set her on fire has been jailed for 19 years for her attempted murder.

The sickening crime took place in Fatsa, Ordu Province, Turkey, on 12th January when jilted Erkan Emiroglu went in search of his former partner Elvan Sozkesen.

The couple had been together for 10 years and had two children together.

But Elvan had divorced Emiroglu, 38, in 2021 due to his violent behaviour.

Judges heard how Emiroglu went to Elvan’s apartment block and waited outside her front door.

When she arrived home, he began arguing with her outside the flat.

During the row, he brandished the flammable liquid, threw it over her, and set her alight.

After Elvan, 38, was engulfed in flames, neighbours heard her blood-curdling screams and called emergency services.

She was first taken to hospital in Fatsa and then transferred to a specialised facility in Samsun to be treated for second-degree burns all over her body.

Emiroglu was later caught and arrested by police.

His father, Tahsin Emiroglu, was also seized for allegedly helping him but later acquitted.

Prosecutors charged Emiroglu with aggravated attempted murder.

In the sixth hearing of the case, he was found guilty and sentenced to 19 years in prison.

Elvan has since been discharged from hospital.
