This is the horrifying image that greeted a hungry customer showing part of a human finger that was accidentally severed by a chef chopping sausages, which then fell into a takeaway meal box.

The alarming discovery was made by an unnamed customer whose food was delivered from a snack bar in the northern area of the city of Sao Paulo in the southeastern Brazilian state of the name.

The Secretary of Public Security (SSP) report that police officers were called to the scene when customers were complaining outside the snack bar.

Local media outlet Globo report the SSP said: “The complainants were at the scene and said they had ordered food to be delivered and when they went to eat, they came across a finger inside the food.”

The military police told Globo they spoke to the owner of the eatery, who admitted that “one of the workers had cut off part of his finger whilst cutting a sausage, he looked for it but couldn’t find it and was taken to hospital.”

The chef, who has not been named, said the worker had been taken to the Public Service Hospital but had now been released and was recovering at home.

Globo report he told the police he had looked for the missing chunk of his finger in the food, on the floor and around the cooking equipment but he could not find it. He had then been forced to give up in order to go to hospital, and it had apparently fallen into the takeaway meal box where it was then delivered.

The owner shut the restaurant after the incident and the authorities have now confirmed it needs to remain shut down as an investigation into the incident has been launched.

The case will be investigated as a crime against consumer relations, endangering the life or health of another, and negligent bodily harm.

The customer’s food was taken for analysis at the Criminalistic Institute and the chunk of finger was taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine.

The investigation is ongoing.
