The incident took place in the city of Baltimore, in the US state of Maryland.

Two officers were driving together in a patrol vehicle when they received a report of a male – later identified as Tyree Moorehead, 46 – holding a knife to a woman’s neck in the street, according to a statement Newsflash obtained from Baltimore Police.

The officers were on the scene within two minutes of receiving the call.

Body-worn footage shows Moorehead holding a large kitchen knife near the woman.

After the officers ordered him to drop the knife, Moorehead rolled over on top of the woman, Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said.

Seconds later, officer Zachary Rutherford could be seen opening fire and emptying his entire load, reportedly shooting Moorehead a total of 14 times.

Moorehead was given medical aid immediately after the shooting and was transferred to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Harrison said in a press conference that the woman was not stabbed or shot, and it is not clear whether she and Moorehead knew each other before the alleged attack.

It is currently not known why Moorehead was brandishing a knife at the woman.

His partner, Angelia McDonald, told local media that he had been struggling with mental issues before his death.

Moorehead was a local rapper who was somewhat known for spray-painting ‘No Shoot Zones’ around Baltimore at crime scenes.

The incident caused outrage in the local community, with some heavily criticising Rutherford’s actions.

The investigation is currently ongoing.
