Super flyweight Moises Fuentes Rubio suffered the deadly blow during his last professional match against fellow Mexican David Cuellar in Cancun on 16th October last year.

His previous match had taken place more than three years earlier, in September 2018, and Fuentes had looked visibly tired as his final match progressed.

He never managed to recover from the powerful blow that knocked him unconscious and led to him being taken away from the ring on a stretcher.

He was rushed to a local hospital where a blood clot on the brain forced surgeons to operate on him.

Though his life was saved at the time, he never recovered, and after more than a year in hospital, he finally lost his battle on 24th November.

His death was announced by World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman, who took to social media to write: “Thank God Moises Fuentes is already resting in peace. A warrior who fought to the last breath.

“Our condolences to his family and friends and recognition to his wife for her dedication with indescribable love during this difficult year of suffering. RIP.”

Fuentes, born in Mexico City, made his professional boxing debut in a victory over fellow countryman David Solano in May 2007.

During his career, he had 33 pro fights, racking up 25 wins – 14 by knockout – and one draw.

He won the WBC interim Youth mini flyweight title in February 2010 and the WBO mini flyweight title in August 2011, retaining the latter in June 2012 and again in October 2012.

He also won the WBO interim junior flyweight title in September 2013 and the vacant WBO-NABO flyweight title in July 2015.

He leaves behind his wife, Janine Martinez Osorio, and two children, Moises and Santiago, who were aged seven and five in February.
