Feisty Ostrich Strikes Again As Hapless Relative Pops By To Collect Eggs

The feisty ‘guard ostrich’ that hit the headlines last month for attacking an illegal fisherman has shown off its security skills again when a relative popped by to collect some eggs.

The incident was filmed at a private property near the city of Yancheng in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu on 8th January.

In the funny footage, probably best accompanied with the Benny Hill theme song, the feisty ostrich is seen confronting the relative before disarming him of his pole and chasing him around the pond.

At the end of the clip, the fleeing man is seen diving headfirst down the bank to avoid the pecking ostrich.

When the ostrich backs away, he dusts himself off and leaves the way he came without collecting his eggs.

The ostrich’s owner, Mr Sun, said he was not at home when the family member popped by, adding: “The ostrich started to chase him and he was knocked down. Not only were his clothes ruined, but he almost fell into the pond too. Of course, he did not get the eggs either.”

The relative was uninjured in the ostrich attack.

The same bird hit the headlines last month after attacking an illegal fisherman at the property.

According to the news site Toutiao, three men made a hole in the fence to enter the property and fish at the pond on 4th December.

However, one of them chose to fish on the side where the ostrich ‘guards’ its turf.

As a result, the fisherman was repeatedly attacked and trampled on while trying to protect himself with a pole, as seen in the footage.

Mr Sun said he bought the flightless bird three years ago and that it now weighs over 200 kilogrammes (441 lbs).

He admitted that he has also felt the bird’s wrath in the past, adding that his whole body ached for several days after being stepped on.

Mr Sun said that actually, he does not mind people fishing at the pond, so much so that it can sometimes get busy on the weekends, but he always asks that people inform him beforehand to avoid experiencing the ostrich’s ‘hospitality’.

On this occasion, the fishermen reportedly sneaked into the property and Mr Sun only found out when he saw the incident afterwards when reviewing the CCTV footage.

Mr Sun said he checked with a friend and the affected fisherman, aged around 50, was uninjured in the incident.

He added that he likes the ostrich very much because it knows how to protect his property better than any guard dog.
