According to reports, one of her neighbours alerted the emergency services after not seeing her for three weeks.

It is believed Topescu died just after Christmas and two dead dogs were found next to her body.

Her last social media activity was recorded on 26th December when she referred to Pope Francis’ message about being kind to animals.

Topescu was last active on WhatsApp on 28th December, according to reports.

Several close friends have claimed that the single woman was suffering from depression, especially since the death of her father and losing her job in 2018.

One friend called Diana Maria said on social media: “Our dear Cris was depressed, are you surprised? She was jobless and taking care of 12 puppies while feeding stray dogs in seven different places.

“She only used money for rent, utilities, gas and cigarettes. All the rest went on animal treatments and dog food.”

Due to the woman’s advanced state of decomposition, forensic experts have been unable to establish the exact cause of death.

However, reports said that traces of several drugs were found in the 59-year-old’s stomach and toxicology tests will be carried out.

The journalist was a celebrity at birth as her father was much-loved sports commentator Cristian Topescu.

She worked for several TV stations, but spent most of her career as an anchor for the evening news programme on Prima TV channel. Local media also report that she had become an adviser to the new Health Minister, Victor Costache, at the end of last year.

Reports said that Topescu’s body will be cremated on Wednesday and interred in her home city of Oradea.
