A court in Poland has convicted a bungee instructor after a snapped cord sent a jumper plummeting 330 feet to the ground head-first.
Remarkably, the 39-year-old survived the horror plunge in Gdynia in July 2019 but was taken to hospital with a broken spine and multiple internal injuries.
The incident happened when the man’s harness snapped from the bungee cord, as seen in this harrowing footage.
He landed onto an airbag with a thud and would certainly have died had he hit the grass instead.
And now a court in Gdynia has ruled that a bungee instructor was at fault over the incident.
At the hearing on 28th December, the court sentenced Krzysztof M. to one year in prison, with the sentence suspended for three years.
This means that if he breaches a set of strict conditions at any point over the next three years, he will be sent to jail.
If he complies with the conditions, he will avoid being locked up altogether.
Judge Maciej Potyrala had argued during the hearing that there must have been visible damage to the cord following an earlier jump.
But, he said, Krzysztof M. would have decided that the damage did not pose a safety hazard.
The damage to the rope had exposed eight jumpers to danger, prosecutors said.
The victim’s current state of health is unclear, but prosecutors said he had sustained long-lasting damage from his injuries.
The ruling is not final.
